Information
Amphion, Swedish Royal Yacht. Corel’s wooden ship model kit features double plank-on-bulkhead construction using fine quality woods. The kit includes pre-cut keel and frames, all necessary wood strips and dowels, cast metal decorations, specialty fittings in wood and cast metal, sail cloth, and detailed plans and instructions.
Designed and built as a fast vessel for the use of king Gustav III of Sweden, it was also used in naval battles such as the victorious Battle of Svenskund against the Russians. Launched in 1778, it was built to a design of Fredrik Chapman in the Djurgarden shipyard in Stockholm. Chapman was the first naval architect to codify the design of the hull on the basis of precise mathematical ratios, rather than relying exclusively on empirical methods common at that time. The ship’s fine lines gave it exceptional sailing qualities. Corel’s Swedish Yacht Amphion ship model kit is based on original documents of the period and shows the ship as it looked in 1790.
Corel of Milano Italy has been making wooden model kits of period and modern ships since 1971, and enthusiasts will know about their high quality, use of the best materials, almost no plastic parts, good quality wood in various varieties, cast and gilded metal decorations, photo-etched parts in brass or copper, and everything provided for easy assembly of the model. Included one-to-one plans are clear and highly detailed.
This is a challenging wooden model kit designed for experienced ship modelers. At minimum, less experienced ship modelers should consider purchasing the book Planking Techniques for Model Shipbuilders, available here.
