Viking Ship – Drakkar by Amati 1:50 scale

Vikings, once some of the greatest sea fairing people have left their mark on history. Their conquests of Europe and the debate over North America have inspired poets, bards and even TV shows.

Most famous of the old Viking vessels is the 70 ft. long Oseberg was found in Norway near the town of Oseberg in 1903. It was buried under many layers of peat and stones, resting on a bed of clay. The oar and sail driven ship was built in the latter half of the 9th century and was buried approximately 50 years later. Historians believe that the Oseberg is nearly 100 years older than any other Viking ship previously discovered. In recent years, many more of these large vessels have been found across Europe.

The Vikings didn’t just use these ships for sailing. Once they got to land, the people aboard would carry the ship upside down across the terrain and use it as temporary shelter until something else could be built. This came in handy when they reached the British Isles as the weather there, especially near the coast, is temperamental.

Amati’s model is inspired by this famous 9th century Viking ship.
