Diana – 18th Century Spanish Frigate by OcCre

Diana – The frigate was the 18th century equivalent of the cruiser, used for a wide variety of roles from fleet reconnaissance to patrolling the sea lanes. Launched in 1792, the Diana was typical of the Spanish frigates of the period. She took part in the war against France along the Catalan coast. As a member of the naval forces of Havana, she took part in battles against the corsairs in the Antilles and made various trips across the Atlantic. The Diana was broken up in 1833 in the naval shipyard of Cartagena.

Diana – 18th Century Spanish Frigate by OcCre. The frigate Diana was launched on the 10th of March 1792. It formed part of the series of frigates known as “Mahonesas”, as they had been built in the city of Mahón.

Thanks to its design, it could sail faster than its predecessors. It took part in the war against France along the Catalan coast although, during the war of Independence, its base was in Cadiz. As a member of the naval forces of Havana, it took part in battles against the corsairs in the Antilles and made various trips across the Atlantic. It was broken up in 1833 in the naval shipyard of Cartagena.

The Diana kit by OcCre is an accurate scale representation of this historic vessel. Construction is single plank-on-bulkhead. All wooden parts are laser cut for ease of assembly. The fittings package consists of hundreds of parts too numerous to mention. Cannon barrels, bell, rudder hinges, eyebolts, rings are brass. Figurehead, bell tower and bell, helm, anchors, two ship’s boats, belaying pins, and waist railing newel posts are cleanly cast white metal. Gilded metal is used for gun carriages, gun ports and frames. Four diameters of rigging form the lines and pre-sewn cloth sails are ready to rig. Seven sheets of plans, clearly written English instructions and over 100 photos of every step of construction make building the Diana a pleasure.
