Smaller, Easy-To-Build
Model Made by Model Shipways, under license from Amati, Italy’s foremost
ship model manufacturer.
The Canadian schooner Bluenose was built in 1921 to fish the
rough waters off the coast of Newfoundland. A salt banker type,
she stayed out until her holds were full, using salt to preserve the
catch. To encourage the development of faster schooners, the Halifax
Herald and the Halifax Evening Mail offered a prize of $4,000 to the
schooner that won a series of 40-mile races. Bluenose beat New England’s
Elsie in 1921, won three races in 1922, two in 1923, and three more in
1931. Bluenose was Canada’s official representative at the “Century of
Progress” exhibition in Chicago in 1933. She was lost off Haiti in 1946.
Amati, Italy’s foremost manufacturer of high quality ship kits, has
granted Model Shipways license to produce the Bluenose in America. In
1:100 scale, it’s smaller and less complex than Model Shipways’ larger
1:64 scale kit. The new Bluenose is easier to build and costs much, much
less. Best of all, we have not cut corners or compromised quality.
Plank-on-bulkhead kit uses laser-cut basswood for keel, stern
reinforcements, hull supports and other components. Thin, flexible
basswood strips are used for hull and deck planking. Trim pieces are
beautiful dark walnut. Fittings consist of true-to-scale Britannia
metal, brass and hardwood parts. Two diameters rigging line, cotton
sailcloth and colorful Canadian flag add life-like authenticity. Detailed
plans and step-by-step illustrated instruction manual take you from
start to finish.
