HMS SUPPLY 1788
 

On the 13th May 1787 the first of two fleets departed from Plymouth, England on a journey to the far side of the world. Under the leadership of Captain Arthur Phillip, the convoy of 11 ships contained 1500 marines, officers, seaman and their families, plus 732 convicts. They were bound for the great South Land to establish the penal colony of New South Wales, (Australia). The fleet took eight months and one week to arrive in Botany Bay and just seven days later, on the 26th January 1788, sailed into Port Jackson, now known as Sydney Harbour. Captain Phillip proclaimed the first Australia day and became first Governor of the new nation.

HMS Supply, of 168 tons, was a swift sailor and acted as a scout and message carrier during the voyage, being the first ship to enter Botany Bay. Along with the Sirius, the Supply rates as one of the most famous historical ships of the new Australian nation.
